Productivity Gradients in Mangroves

Sampling in the mangrove forest at FCE (Shark River A3)
Mangrove forests in the Florida Everglades form an ecotone, which is a critical link between freshwater marshes and the marine environments of Florida Bay and the Gulf of Mexico. These forested wetlands provide shoreline protection against storms, "nurseries" for shrimp, fish, and crabs, as well as habitat for several endangered and threatened species such as the American crocodile. FCE researchers have made important contributions to our understanding of mangrove forest structure and productivity trends.
